Billy Al Bengston

b. 1934

Born in Dodge City, Kansas; lives in Venice, California.

Part of the Southern California group of artists who got their early start at Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles, Bengston's subjects and palette often reflect the beach culture to which he has been closely allied for many years. Punk Chino and Punk Indio are constructed from two sheets of paper, with the top piece cut out and folded to reveal the color behind it. Manana Corrida presented a special challenge for our curator who had to reconstruct how the collaged elements were cut from a single sheet of paper.
