Born in Pirlangimpi, Melville Island, Northern Territory, Australia.
Jean Baptiste Apuatimi is one of the most renowned artists on the Tiwi Islands. Jean lived at Nguiu, Bathurst Island for the majority of her life and began working as an artist at Tiwi Design Aboriginal Corporation in 1997. Jean’s Tamarind lithographs, made during her visit to New Mexico in 2012, like her paintings, depict designs associated with important ceremonies and Tiwi culture. Apuatimi has earned significant recognition in the art world as both an abstract painter and custodian of Tiwi culture.
Her daughter, Maria Josette Orsto, participated in Tamarind's LandMarks project.
