Chester Arnold

b. 1952

Born in Santa Monica, California; lives in San Francisco Bay Area.

In his lithographs created at Tamarind in 1997, Arnold portrays the landscape as it is redefined by contemporary culture. As in his recent paintings, Arnold conveys his strong moral convictions about the environment by by presenting evidence of the human activity that alters the the natural landscape.  Arnold draws inspiration from the 1920s and 1930s shift to naturalism among the German Expressionists as well as from Piranesi's use of dizzying perspectives.

My paintings are part of a visual dialogue running the length and breadth of human history. The search for excellence in this Art and Craft has led me to explore the natural world and the human events that inhabit it, constructing narratives that celebrate and question our presence in the world.
