Review of Tamarind Techniques for Fine Art Lithography in Print Quarterly by Antony Griffiths.

TAMARIND AND LITHOGRAPHY. This Journal does not usually give notice of newly published manuals for print-makers. There are many of these, published in some quantity to meet the demand (perhaps now diminishing) for textbooks from schools of art. Some are better than others. I remember reading with certain disbelief one such book that had emerged from Central Europe, where the section on woodcut began with advice on how to recognize a suitable tree in a forest and cut it down. A new manual on lithography from the Tamarind Institute of the University of New Mexico is, however, something that does require acknowledgment. It is not just that Tamarind has exercised such a huge influence over the history of lithography; it is also because this publication is more than a cookbook of recipes. Read entire review.

Albuquerque, NM - Tamarind Institute, Albuquerque's world-renowned lithography studio and gallery, has been awarded $100,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts in support of its 50th anniversary exhibition and catalogue. The exhibition, with a working title of "Impressive Impressions: Fifty Years of Tamarind Lithographs," will be organized by Tamarind in cooperation with the University of New Mexico Art Museum. The exhibit is scheduled to open on September 10, 2010 and will subsequently travel to other venues in the U.S.

"Impressive Impressions" will feature a selection of 80 lithographs representing the range of work done during Tamarind's five decades, as well as an "honoree" section featuring lithographs by artists who have made outstanding contributions to American lithography. Read more in UNM Today.

Tamarind Connects with Cuban Artists Taller Experimental, a printmaking studio and gallery in Havana, Cuba, was buzzing with activity when Tamarind Institute Director Marjorie Devon visited last month. The purpose of Devon’s trip was to arrange for a Cuban lithographer’s visit to Tamarind this summer.

“There is a vibrant community of visual and performing artists in Cuba and many of them have established reputations abroad despite travel restrictions,” she said. The graphic arts have a strong tradition and continue to thrive with many contemporary artists working in print media at Taller Experimental. Read the article in UNM Today.

Synergy: Word+Visual Art+Printmaking

National Endowment for the Arts awards a first-time grant to Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless for a collaborative project between ArtStreet, the Harwood Art Center, and the Tamarind Institute

This project, called Synergy: Word+Visual Art+Printmaking, will begin in September 2008 and culminate with two exhibits open to the public in March and April 2009.
