Artist Statement, 2010
During the past few years I have been making plastic, inflatable forms that slowly deflate and flatten. With these forms I observe transitions between two- and three-dimensional states, revel in both, and achieve neither. I am intrigued by the convergence of opposites evident in this work and the restlessness of the finished forms.

My prints evolve from drawing these sculptural models. The seams on my inflatable forms or the gestures and planes of my small ceramic sculptures map an intuitive process of decision-making. Later I fix those lines in drawings, prints, or photographs in order to honor the serendipitous nature of the original effort. I wonder then — Am I getting closer to the center of things?

Artist's Statement, 2004
Several years ago, watching a swarm of gnats hovering against the sky, I was struck by the contradictory but beautiful visual effect: a delicate grey sphere suspended in air; an awesome chaos of frenetic movement. I am interested in such visually cohesive forms that nevertheless contain a chaotic structure - tangles of thread, electronic circuitry, swarms of insects in flight. There is something terrifying about their massive intricacy, and something beautiful in the rhythms of their minute and repetitive detail. My methods are labor-intensive - I work from the conviction that any content gathers depth and density with the accumulation of evident labor. Really looking can be exhausting, and tenuous; every decision, no matter how minute, communicates and contributes to the whole.
