professional printer
training program
Tamarind's two-part
printer training program is designed for students who wish to pursue careers
as fine art collaborative printers. This intensive, full-time program
concentrates first on strengthening and refining the lithography student's
technical skills, then on the application of those skills to collaborative
projects.
A new m.F.A. to focus on Lithography, offered by Tamarind in cooperation with the University
of New Mexico's Department of Art and Art History, allows students to
complete the first year at Tamarind, plus 2 additional years at UNM, or,
if selected for the Master Printer Program, 2 years at Tamarind, plus
one additional year at UNM. Download
The 2013-14 professional program will begin on August 19, 2013 and end on May 17, 2014, with a break of one month mid-December
to mid-January. A maximum of eight students will be accepted. Students will
be required to enroll in the following courses:
Professional
Lithography I (4 credit hours). An intensive technical course which
covers the theoretical and applied aspects of the medium. Taught by
Tamarind's education director, the course includes frequent lectures
and demonstrations as well as forty hours or more per week in the workshop.
Lithography
Workshop I (2 credit hours). Meets once a week to address
topics related to the operation of a professional printmaking workshop.
Taught by the Tamarind director, with guest lecturers, it includes
sessions on legal, financial, publishing, and marketing issues.
spring semester
Professional Lithography II (3 credit
hours). Provides practical collaborative experience for printer-trainees
who will work with graduate student artists (selected from a variety
of studio disciplines) from the Department of Art and Art History of
the University of New Mexico.
History of the Graphic Arts II (3 credit hours).
Covers the development of the original print from Goya to the present.
Offered through the Department of Art and Art History at the University
of New Mexico.
PLEASE NOTE: Although students are required to enroll for only six credit hours per semester,
this is an intensive program that requires a minimum of 60 hours participation
per week.
costs
Costs for participation in the professional printer training program will
include University of New Mexico tuition for two semesters (approximately
$2,000 per semester), plus a minimum of $800 per month for living expenses.
For the first semester only, a fee of $1500 for expendable materials will
be payable directly to Tamarind the first day of classes, and additional
drawing and printing supplies will cost approximately $450 for both semesters.
(Note: You do not need to apply
to UNM when you apply to Tamarind, this will be done after you have been
accepted into our program)
international
students
Students who are not United States citizens will be
required to obtain a visa. After a student is admitted to Tamarind, the
University of New Mexico will initiate the paperwork needed to obtain this
visa. All foreign students must prove that they have the equivalent of $12,750,
the amount necessary to support one person (the amount is greater if family
members accompany the student) for the nine-month period of the Tamarind
course. Due to the intense demands of the course, outside employment is
not recommended. If absolutely necessary, however, there may be limited
work opportunities on the University of New Mexico campus. International
students are not eligible for student loans, but may be eligible for limited
financial assistance from Tamarind Institute.
master
printer program
Printers who have successfully completed the Professional
Printer Training Program may apply for admission to the Master Printer
Training Program, a year-long internship in Tamarind's professional
workshop. A limited number of Master Printer candidates are selected
to work under the supervision of shop manager Bill Lagattuta to collaborate
with and print editions for visiting artists, participate in shop
management, and conduct an extensive research
project.
Senior printers who successfully
complete the year-long program are certified as Tamarind Master Printers. There
are no fees for the Master Printer Training Program; printers are
paid a minimal stipend sufficient to cover basic living expenses.

m.f.a. to focus on lithography: Tamarind Institute and Department
of Art and Art History, University of New Mexico
In addition to its Professional Printer Training and Master
Printer Training programs, Tamarind Institute now offers, in cooperation with
the University of New Mexico's Department of Art and Art History, the option
of pursuing an M.F.A.upon completion of the Tamarind program. Degree
requirements can normally be completed in three years. Credit hours taken at
Tamarind can be applied to the M.F.A. program.
All students must have a strong interest in collaborative printmaking
as Tamarind's programs focus on the acquisition of the technical and interpersonal
skills for collaborative lithography. Students apply directly to TI for admission
to the Professional Printer Training Program, and all students must complete
the first year Professional Printer Training at Tamarind. This intensive program
requires a time commitment of a minimum of 60 hours per week. See description
above.
At the end of the Fall semester of the Professional Printer
Training Program, students who wish to follow the M.F.A. track must apply for
admission to graduate study to the University of New Mexico by January 15. The
M.F.A. is the terminal degree in studio art and emphasizes the creative aspects
of an individual's work.
Students must meet all the criteria and be accepted by Art
and Art History in order to pursue the M.F.A. track after completing the Professional
Printer Training program at Tamarind. Acceptance into the M.F.A. program is
not guaranteed. Those who wish to be assured of having a place in the MFA program
for the second year must be accepted simultaneously to Tamarind and Art and
Art History (note that their deadline for admission is January 15; Tamarind's
is February 1.) Accepted candidates who do not participate in the Master Printer
Program at Tamarind (only 1 – 3 candidates are accepted into this program each
year) will complete years 2 and 3 in Art and Art History. Please see below for
M.F.A. degree requirements..
During the Spring semester of the Professional Printer Training
Program, students interested in pursuing Tamarind Master Printer Program must
submit an application to the Master Printer Training Program at Tamarind. If
accepted to the Master Printer Program, M.F.A.track students stay at Tamarind
for year 2, then complete A&AH requirements during year 3. M.F.A./Master
Printer Program students receive a stipend from TI, and must register for 12
credit hours each semester while in the Master Printer Program. All M.F.A. track
students must take the Methods course in the Fall semester of the second year
and the Interdisciplinary Seminar in the Fall semester of the third year.
Students who have completed the Professional Printer Training
Program but do not wish to follow the M.F.A. track will also have the opportunity
to apply for the Master Printer program. If accepted, they will receive a stipend,
but they will not be required to register for credit.
