An Alternative to Stone

Adams, Ben Q.

It has been conventional practice to use stones as plate supports when printing from metal plates. Benelex, a synthetic compressed masonic, is also widely employed.

Report upon an attempt to find alternatives to plate supports. He discusses and evaluates prototypes constructed from polyester resin, fiberglass, fiberglass cloth, metal phenolic plates, and honeycomb aluminum. The prototypes constructed were light in weight, more resilient and less expensive than stone. Although they appear to be capable of withstanding normal press pressure, they have not yet undergone extensive testing over long periods of time.
