Jordan Ann Craig
Introducing Jordan Ann Craig
We are thrilled to introduce our 2024 artist, Jordan Ann Craig (b.1992). Known for her large-scale paintings, Craig’s abstract compositions explore Northern Cheyenne material culture. Her work blends hard-edge painting aesthetics with Indigenous patterns, celebrating her Native ancestry while challenging the conventions of modern abstract painting and its links to both historic and contemporary Indigenous culture.
Craig’s research-driven practice begins in museum collections and archives, where she meticulously studies Indigenous objects, specifically Cheyenne beadwork, drawings, and textiles. Her geometric paintings are characterized by repeated triangles, squares, rectangles, and stripes—motifs emblematic of Northern Cheyenne design. Throughout her creative process, Craig contemplates both the individual and communal meanings inherent in these designs, intertwining her personal narratives with objects imbued with profound historical resonance. By bridging past, present, and future, she presents Indigenous design through a contemporary lens.
Craig received her BA in Studio Art and Psychology from Dartmouth College in 2015. Craig has had solo exhibitions at the Roswell Museum and Art Center, NM; School for Advanced Research, Santa Fe, NM; The Guesthouse, Cork, Ireland; Scuola Internazionale di Grafica Venezia, Italy; Nearburg Gallery, Black Family Visual Arts Center, Hanover, NH; October Gallery, London, UK; and Barrows Rotunda, Dartmouth College, NH.
Her work is in the permanent collections of Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Hood Museum of Art, Wichita Art Museum, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Speed Art Museum, Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, Roswell, NM; IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, Santa Fe, NM; Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland Park, KS; Kala Art Institute, Berkeley, CA; School for Advanced Research, Santa Fe, NM; A LAB, Amsterdam, Netherlands; Cork Printmakers, Ireland; Tia Collection, Santa Fe, NM and Forge Collection, Taghkanic, NY.
