ABOUT THE ARTIST
From Artnet: Gregory Amenoff is a contemporary American abstract painter who employs both biomorphic forms in rich hues and thick textures. Exploring the formal language of American Modernism, Amenoff creates chimerical and illusive works. “Paintings are alternate worlds—worlds unto themselves, manifested by each artist to satisfy a desire to fill a void,” he has said. Born in 1948 in Saint Charles, IL, he moved to Boston after earning a BA in history from Beloit College in 1970. Settling in New York in 1979, the artist came to critical acclaim as his paintings of the 1980s spearheaded wave of abstraction alongside Terry Winters, Bill Jensen, and Katherine Porter. Amenoff’s career has been framed by extensive academic leadership and awards, including co-founding the CUE Art Foundation, teaching at Columbia University since 1994, and a 2011 Guggenheim Fellowship. The artist lives and works between New York, NY and his Hudson Valley residence.
