John Beerman is a master of capturing the rural American sublime. Drawing inspiration from the Hudson River School and their successors, the Luminists, Beerman has always been captivated by the poetic radiance inherent in the American landscape. With techniques refined over decades of meticulous observation, he masterfully conveys the subtleties of a scene through a rich palette of hues and tones, demonstrating an artistic acumen of the highest order. Throughout his career, John’s plein air endeavors have taken him from the Hudson Valley to Texas, New Mexico, and his native North Carolina, always striving to immortalize his homage to light in oil.
His works has been widely exhibited nationally and internationally with representation in numerous private and public collections such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. In addition to completing several public commissions, Beerman has also received a fellowship to the Yaddo Artist Colony and the Pollack-Krasner Foundation Award.
This lithograph had its beginnings in one of my favorite places for sketching – a state park a few miles north of our home in the Hudson River Valley region os New York State. What I observed that July morning was a bank of trees in their peak summer abundance, with deep shadowy blues and muted grey greens in a luminous silhouette against a brightening yellow sky. I strive to record and preserve a particular moment in time – a cloud formation, a summer sunset, a winter’s field – a moment when I feel especially connected to the natural world.
