Stuart Arends

b. 1950 in Waterloo, IA; lives in Willard, NM

Stuart Arends’s sculptures are concise and exact meditations on line and form, with veil-like colors layered by wax, pencil, and paint. At Tamarind, Arends created editions exploring transparency, high chroma color, geometric patterns, and gestural text. He also created a small edition of lithograph-skinned wooden boxes, with the subtle pink, green, and white of the desert landscape.

Arends received his M.F.A. from Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, California. He has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions including Stormy Monday: New Works by Stuart Arends at James Kelly Contemporary in Santa Fe, New Mexico. His work is in the collections of The Whitney Museum, New York; New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe; The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York; Palazzo delle Albere, Trento, Italy and more.
