Tom Berg is known for his paintings of chairs, a subject that has been central to his work since his first chair series in the late 1970s. His artistic exploration, however, extends far beyond chairs, encompassing a diverse array of subjects such as farm animals, architecture, clotheslines, swimming pools, and hand tools. These are rendered in a style that navigates the boundaries of landscape painting, still life, and portraiture. Berg frequently paints “en plein air,” though his approach diverges from traditional still life and landscape conventions. His work is marked by a strong sense of frontality, a focus on the picture plane, and a keen attention to geometric composition, all executed with a painterly touch. Rather than focusing on the identity of the objects, Berg’s paintings emphasize confrontation and presence, moving fluidly between humor, irony, contemplation, and a sense of pathos.
Berg has been the subject of various solo exhibitions, including at Mill Street Gallery, Aspen, CO; Victoria Price Art and Design, Santa Fe, NM; and Wade Wilson Art, Houston, TX.
