Sidney Amaral

(1973 – 2017)

Sidney Amaral was an artist and educator in Brazil. For approximately two decades, he worked in drawing, painting, and sculpture, appropriating and fusing everyday objects into new forms that he cast in bronze, marble, resin, and porcelain. He is considered a leading artist in Afro-Brazilian contemporary art for his approach to ethno-racial themes, from structural slavery in Brazil to black artists’ freedom of expression and choice of materials. In 2012, he participated in the project AFRO: Black Identity in America and Brazil at Tamarind, and produced two editions dealing with the complexities of racial identity.

Amaral earned a degree in art education from Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado (FAAP) and studied design at the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios, as well as Academic painting with Pedro Alzaga and photography at the ECOS School of Photography. His work is in the collections of the Museu Afro Brasil, the Pinacoteca do Estado in São Paulo, Itaú Cultural Collection, and the Central Gallery of Contemporary Art. His work can also be found in the collections of several private collectors and has been included in numerous group exhibitions.
