Multimedia artist Shinique Smith is known for her monumental works of fabric, clothing, and collected objects which resonate on a personal and social level. Drawing from and commenting on the vast nature of “things” we consume and discard, she pulls from vibrant sources including dance, graffiti, Japanese calligraphy, and fashion. Her residency at Tamarind resulted in three published editions incorporating her personal abstraction, fluid gestural marks, and sculptural tied bundles.
Smith attended the Maryland Institute of Arts, where she received her BA and MFA. Her work has been collected and exhibited widely, with solo exhibitions at the Baltimore Museum of Art, UBS Art Collection Gallery, California African American Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Savannah College of Art and Design, The Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, among many other venues. In 2016, she was awarded the prestigious Anonymous Was A Woman Prize.
